By Araba, Olawale Enifenilanfe:

Asiwaju Chief Reuben Olorunfunmi Basorun, a distinguished elder statesman and member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), has stated significant concerns regarding the prospective appointment of Mojisola Oyesanya Adopted as Acting Iya-Oloja General of Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in a press conference held on Monday, November 25th, 2024 at Bashorun’s residential office to propel Igbogbo-Baiyeku community’s peaceful coexistence.

He emphasized that this appointment must involve the acknowledgement of local government officials, specifically Builder Olusesan Mayokun Daini and His Excellency Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu. Excluding these stakeholders from the decision-making process could lead to community unrest.

In his discourse, Chief Basorun referenced section (e) of the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution of Nigeria as amended which relates to the Functions of a Local government, i.e. establishing and regulating markets etc. He underscored the necessity of adhering to constitutional protocols to avert conflict within the Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA.

To mitigate potential discord, Basorun has engaged with His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdulsemiudeen Kasali Emugoriade, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo, as well as Chief Mrs. Folashade Ojo, the Iyaloja General of Nigeria. He has advocated for the suspension of all related activities until the appropriate processes are duly observed. His primary objective is to ensure peaceful coexistence within the community while expressing his reluctance to engage in disputes.

Furthermore, he posited that the market community should possess the autonomy to select their leader, who would subsequently seek royal blessings before approaching the local council and state government for the requisite documentation.

Chief Basorun also alluded to the historical establishment of the Igbogbo Market Association, initiated by him in 1973, with Madam Ayedun Obayomi serving as Iyaloja from 1973 to 1997. He highlighted the procedural protocols that must be adhered to for the election of market leaders, asserting that the role of traditional leaders in this context is limited to initiating the process rather than imposing definitive outcomes.

He cautioned against neglecting the wisdom of elders, stating, “A word is enough for the wise.” Chief Basorun reiterated the importance of ensuring that ceremonial roles do not supplant constitutional responsibilities, emphasizing the need for community harmony and strict adherence to established regulations.
