In a significant endeavor to advocate for social impact technology in Lagos State and across Nigeria, the COAPPT organization, under the leadership of Mr. Lekan Lawal, successfully convened the inaugural Social Impact Tech Summit on Friday, January 24, 2025. The event was held at America Corner, situated at 42 Local Airport Road, Concord Bus Stop, Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria.

The summit was themed “Leveraging Technology Towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” emphasizing the importance of advanced capacity building in contemporary practices.

In an interview, Mr. Lekan Lawal, Chief Executive Officer of COAPPT, highlighted the critical need for inclusive policies that enhance accessibility to psychological and technological resources in Nigeria and throughout Africa.

He emphasized the necessity for governmental investment to cultivate a supportive ecosystem and advocated for collaborative partnerships between the public and private sectors, asserting that social impact should serve as the primary objective.

Mr Joshua Theophilus, known as JT, the VP of Products, SellMedia Group, addressed the vital role of digital education. He proposed that young individuals should commence acquiring digital skills as early as secondary school to adequately prepare for future opportunities.

JT recognized the interest of students in training programs; however, he underscored the importance of sustained engagement for their development. He advocates for grassroots education to empower communities, asserting that technology should be integrated as a lifestyle rather than viewed merely as a skill.

Both speakers underscored the urgent need for awareness, education, and supportive policies to foster social impact and technological advancement.

In a recent interview with Hon. (Dr.) Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, the National Chairman of the All Local Government Vice Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGOVC), she emphasized the significant social impact that technological advancements can yield in Nigeria and reiterated their necessity.

Dr. Olabanji-Oba expressed a desire for this initiative to be distinctive, transcending the constraints of a traditional annual event. It is essential for a broader audience to recognize the critical role of technology in enhancing performance and time management, particularly in view of the increasing influence of artificial intelligence.

She encouraged individuals to prioritize self-improvement over fearing job displacement caused by technology, a crucial aspect of personal development.

The discussions yielded numerous insightful perspectives, and participants were encouraged to reflect on this information and implement it effectively. Engaging in dialogue without practical application does not contribute to meaningful progression.

Although she acknowledged that her expertise does not primarily encompass blockchain technology, Dr. Olabanji-Oba emphasized the importance of being informed about the various resources available.

There should be no justification for a lack of knowledge. An informed individual possesses a greater competence. The acquisition of knowledge enhances preparedness and improves planning abilities. It is imperative to understand that one cannot disseminate information that one does not hold.

To be a responsible citizen in Nigeria entails being well-informed and committed to prioritizing national interests. This central message is crucial to the ongoing discourse.
