The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Education and in collaboration with the Ikorodu Local Government, held the 21st edition of the Spelling Bee Competition on September 25, 2025, at the Ikorodu LGA secretariat hall. The event aimed to showcase and enhance the intellectual abilities of primary and secondary school students in Ikorodu.

The competition began with primary school pupils aged 6-12, followed by secondary students who demonstrated remarkable spelling skills.

This initiative was originally introduced by Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s “New Era Foundation” in 2000, the Spelling Bee has evolved into a platform for promoting academic excellence among public school students.

In his welcome address, Hon. Prince Abdullateef Adedayo Ladega, the Executive Chairman of Ikorodu LGA, highlighted the significance of the event as a celebration of knowledge and potential. He encouraged participants, stating, “Today, you are not just spelling – you are speaking your future into existence.”
In the primary category, “Lateef-Rodia” from Salvation Army Primary School emerged as the champion, followed by “Morouf-Waris” from Jamatul Islamiyyah Primary School and “Ifechukuu-UGuunadi” from Community Primary School. In the secondary category, “Uoman Hassanat Shamsiat” from Yewa Grammar School took first place, with “Adekule-Favour-Adenike” from United Junior Secondary School and “Toye Islamiyah Omomayowa” from Yewa Grammar School finishing second and third, respectively.
In a recent interview, a representative from the school support services of Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA) highlighted the positive outcomes of the spelling bee competition. She noted it has revealed hidden talents in students and built their confidence, emphasizing the need for the program to continue.
She expressed gratitude to Hon. Prince Abdullateef Adedayo Ladega for organizing such beneficial events and acknowledged the hard work of teachers in preparing students. Additionally, she praised the school’s commitment to nurturing student potential.
Finally, she stressed the importance of parental support in building children’s self-esteem and confidence, urging parents to encourage their children to believe in their abilities. Miss Allison Taofikat Remilekun, Senior Education Officer of Ikorodu LGA, shared this vital message.
In an interview about the spelling bee competition, Mrs. Kesington Olutosin Oluwabunmi, a Grade 13 staff member in District 2, emphasized the event’s goal of promoting spelling proficiency among students. She pointed out a decline in academic performance in spelling and urged parents to actively monitor their children’s progress. “Today’s children are the future; without reading and writing skills, success becomes challenging,” she stated. Mrs. Oluwabunmi also thanked local government chairman Hon. Prince Abdullateef Adedayo Ladega for his support and expressed hope for continued initiatives.
