The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), in collaboration with the Human Rights Committee, Ikorodu Branch, held a sensitization program titled “Role of Lawyers in Defending Human Rights Activists” on April 28th, 2025, at Bukka-Hut Restaurant Hall, Ikorodu, Lagos.

The event featured various Human Rights sub-committees, including those focused on Domestic Violence, Child’s Rights, Legal Aid, Anti-Human Trafficking, Anti-Cultism, and Prisons Decongestion. These committees play a crucial role in promoting human rights and fostering peaceful coexistence in the community.

Keynote speaker Femi Falana,
a Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, ably represented by Mr. John Aikpokpo-Martins, former 1st vice president of the NBA emphasized the importance of documentation for lawyers and the necessity of giving back to society, comparing it to paying a biblical tithe.

He highlighted the role of Public Interest Litigation in assisting the lower class in accessing justice and called for police involvement in outreach programs.

Martins also pointed out the lack of experienced lawyers in judicial positions and stressed the need for judges to understand the struggles of ordinary citizens. He urged the community to inform lawyers about the issues they face, as proper understanding is critical for justice.

In a speech delivered by the Chairman Emeritor, Pastor Micheal said, It is essential to inform the securities and ensure that lawyers have a comprehensive understanding of the case for the judge to deliver fair justice. If a matter isn’t presented to the judge or lawyer, they cannot grasp what occurred.

Often, lawyers and judges lack detailed knowledge of the case, highlighting society’s role in informing them about what is needed. “Provide your facts and proof,” stated Chairman Emeritus, Pastor Micheal.

The speaker recognized the significant contributions of women in human rights activism.

The event concluded with remarks from the Vice Chairman of the NBA Ikorodu Branch, Mr. Olajide Abiodun, who acknowledged the significant participation of women in human rights activism.
