The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikorodu Branch, has organized the 17th Annual Public Lecture in honour of the late Asiwaju Babatunde Olusola Benson, SAN, KJW, LLD.
This distinguished event took place on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Peakstone Event Centre, situated at 178 Lagos Road, Haruna Bus-Stop, Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria.

The theme for the 2025 Law Week is “Through The Bar—Inspiring Change, Embracing Growth,” which will be concluded on Thursday, May 1st, 2025 while the Topic for the Annual Public Lecture was focused on “Local Government Autonomy in Nigeria: A Myth or A Reality?”
The panel discussion includes esteemed guests such as Hon. Prince Rotimi Ogunleye, former Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry & Cooperatives; Dr. Abiodun Odubote, Associate Professor at the University of Lagos; Olusegun Fabunmi, SAN, Legal Practitioner; Professor Ademola Popoola, a specialist in Comparative Public Law and International Law at Obafemi Awolowo University; and Aarebinrin Hon. Dr. Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, Vice Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government and National Chairman of the Association of Local Government Vice Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGOVC).
These distinguished panellists were engaged in a critical discussion of the current status of Local Government Autonomy in Nigeria.
The lecture commenced with an analysis by Professor Ademola Popoola, a specialist in Comparative Public Law and International Law at Obafemi Awolowo University where he presented an evaluation of the local government reform of 1976, which established a unified local governance system following a period characterized by varying models.
This reform is widely recognized as a pivotal development in the evolution towards civilian governance established by the Federal Military Government, fundamentally transforming the structure and functioning of local governance in Nigeria.
