The 5th edition Educational Stakeholder’s Summit, organized by the Ikorodu Division Human Resources Development Board (IDHRDB) and the Ikorodu Division Resource Development Group (IDRDG), was held today at the Ikorodu Ultra Modern Town Hall, Olubi Street, off Ayangburen road, Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. The summit centred on the theme “Family Structure, Child Socialization, and Children’s Holistic Development.”

The distinguished guest speaker, Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi from the Department of Sociological Education Studies at Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Epe, Lagos State, delivered an insightful lecture. He underscored the importance of proper child parenting and the fundamental values that should be inculcated in children within society.

During the welcome address, Arc. Otunba Taiwo Akintunde Kara, Chairman, of Ikorodu Division Resources Development Group, underscored that the annual gathering was more than a mere meeting; it symbolized the collective commitment of the IDRDG to shaping the future of education in the Ikorodu division.

He emphasized the evolution of the annual stakeholder’s meeting into a critical platform for dialogue, collaboration, and innovation, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, researchers, parents, students, and community leaders, all united by a shared passion to enhance the educational landscape in Ikorodu Division and Lagos State in general. The theme of this year’s summit, “Investigating the Effects of Family Structure on Child Socialization and Their Educational Well-being,” was deemed timely and relevant to meet the evolving needs of society.

In his keynote address, the IDHRDB Chairman, Bashorun Babatunde Tajudeen Rotinwa, emphasized the significance of the 5th edition education stakeholder’s summit as a milestone in the ongoing journey to transform education and shape the future of the Ikorodu division communities and Nigeria at large. The theme served as a poignant reminder of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. In a world where the pace of change is unprecedented, education stands out as the most crucial tool to equip the next generation with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to thrive.

Bashorun Babatunde Tajudeen Rotinwa stressed that it is up to the stakeholders to ensure that education systems evolve in a way that benefits all leaders, promoting quality education, integrating technology in learning, emphasizing lifelong learning, and preparing students for an uncertain future in the Ikorodu division education system and the nation.

During a lecture by the guest speaker of the day, Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi, the focus was on the “Three Ps,” namely Positive Parenting, Purpose, and Policies and Procedures. Positive Parenting was defined as the demonstration of desired parental behaviour with sustainable parental guidance, emphasizing the separation of the deed from the doer in guiding children. The second “P,” Purpose, stressed the essential role of education in achieving professional goals and holistic child development. The third “P,” Policies and Procedures, aimed to ensure the protection of children’s educational experiences and promote a shift from a mere certification mentality to a professional outcome based on acquired knowledge.

During an interview, Prince Adesola Omotayo Benson, a professional shoe cobbler, emphasized the significance of acquiring practical skills before pursuing higher education. He advocated for the integration of practical professional training for first-year university students in Lagos, just like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), to equip them with valuable vocational experience.

Prince Benson also highlighted the need for inclusivity in educational initiatives, expressing concern that current platforms predominantly cater to academically exceptional students, neglecting those from underprivileged backgrounds. He suggested the establishment of an educational platform that accommodates both privileged and underprivileged students, aiming to provide equal opportunities for learning and engagement. His insights underscore the potential benefits of integrating practical skills into the education system and the importance of inclusive educational platforms for students from diverse backgrounds.

In an interview with the Ayangburen of Ikorodu Kingdom, Hrm Oba (Engr.) Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, expressed the importance of monitoring the activities of education throughout the week and emphasized the need to lay a legacy for the future. He underscored the summit’s significance in providing a platform for teachers and students to interact directly, enabling students to learn from the experiences shared and steering them away from negative influences. Additionally, he addressed the economic situation in the country, urging patience, endurance, and perseverance, and expressing confidence in a promising future with the right measures in place.

The summit also featured a question and answer session, along with the recognition of outstanding students, teachers, schools, and philanthropists through diverse awards and cash prize provisions, signifying a commitment to fostering positive change in the educational sector.
