Education is fundamentally recognized as a basic human right and constitutes a vital foundation for individuals to achieve their maximum potential, as well as for the growth and prosperity of societies and economies.

The rapid technological advancements of today, particularly in the realm of Artificial Intelligence, offer significant opportunities to enhance the educational experiences of learners of all ages.

However, the substantial benefits associated with these advancements are accompanied by notable challenges. As AI-driven systems become increasingly sophisticated, the alignment of human intention and the impacts generated by machine learning may become misaligned.

This year’s observance of the International Day of Education serves as a reminder that the effective harnessing of Artificial Intelligence is contingent upon prioritizing human agency and safeguarding human rights amid the ongoing evolution of technology.

It is imperative that Artificial Intelligence serves to assist both students and educators by enhancing access to valuable information, innovative curricula, and various educational tools. Furthermore, we must strive to ensure that all stakeholders possess the necessary tools and knowledge to engage with this technology in an informed, safe, and ethical manner, which includes leveraging UNESCO’s Competency Frameworks to aid learners and educators in integrating Artificial Intelligence into the educational process.

The recently established Global Digital Compact outlines essential measures aimed at ensuring that humanity retains oversight over the development and governance of Artificial Intelligence, rather than yielding control to the technology itself.

Artificial Intelligence must never supplant the indispensable human aspects of the learning experience. On this significant occasion, let us reaffirm our commitment to placing humanity at the core of education systems globally.
