The House of Representatives recently approved a constitutional amendment bill aimed at upgrading the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State to full-fledged Local Government Areas (LGAs).
This legislation, among a total of 42 constitutional amendment bills passed, seeks to increase the local government count in Lagos from 20 to 57, thereby affirming its position as the state with the highest number of LGAs in Nigeria.

This motion was spearheaded by Ikorodu Federal Constituency Representative, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, Mhr and Chairman, Committee on Defence and other representatives from Ikeja Federal Constituency, Hon. James Faleke and Lagos Island I Federal Constituency, Hon. Enitan Badru, respectively.
This proposed legislation signifies a substantial advancement in addressing Lagos’ administrative and infrastructural demands.
Titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to Accommodate the 37 Development Area Councils of Lagos State as Full-Fledged Local Government Areas, Increasing the Total Number of Local Government Areas in the Federation to 811, and for Related Matters (HB. 1498),” the proposal successfully passed its second reading during a plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Mr Benjamin Kalu.
Upon full enactment, Nigeria’s total number of LGAs will increase from 774 to 811, positioning Lagos ahead of Kano and Katsina, which currently possess 44 and 34 LGAs, respectively.
