Holy Saturday, also known as the Great and Holy Saturday, Low Saturday, the Great Sabbath, Hallelujah Saturday, the Saturday of Glory, Easter Eve, Joyous Saturday, the Saturday of Light, Mega Sabbatun, Black Saturday, or SĂĄbado de Gloria, is the final day of Holy Week, which occurs between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It is a period during which Christians prepare for the celebration of the Easter feast.
This day commemorates the Harrowing of Hell, a significant event during the time Jesus Christ’s body remained in the tomb. Practitioners from the Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican, and Reformed denominations initiate the Easter Vigil service on Holy Saturday, which acts as a bridge to the Eastertide season. In the Moravian Christian tradition, it is customary to adorn graves with flowers on Holy Saturday, and the observance of the sunrise service commences before dawn on Easter Sunday.
The significance of Holy Saturday lies in its representation of the transition from Lent and the Triduum to the observance of Easter. It is characterised by a day of reflection and anticipation of the resurrection, marking the final day of Christ’s death, during which He remained in the tomb following His crucifixion, as Christians prepare for the forthcoming celebration of Easter Sunday.
Jesus imparted the teaching that the Sabbath was established for the benefit of humanity (refer to Mark 2:27). The intention of the Sabbath is to provide a designated day each week for individuals to focus their thoughts and actions toward God, transcending mere rest from labour. It is regarded as a sacred day intended for worship and reverence.
âLaRoyal hereby extend earnest greetings to all Christian colleagues and peers around the world on this Holy Sabbath. May the divine grace of the Almighty influence our endeavors favourably in all aspects. Amenđ.
